Rust College Welcomes Professor Derrick C. Lewis Sr. as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands

HOLLY SPRINGS, MS – Rust College proudly announces the appointment of Professor Derrick C. Lewis Sr., MEd, as the College’s new Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands.

Professor Lewis brings more than 20 years of experience in music education, leadership, and program development. He is widely recognized for his commitment to student success, musical excellence, and transformational leadership.

Throughout his career, Professor Lewis has led middle school, high school, and collegiate band programs, earning a reputation for rebuilding organizations, developing student leaders, and cultivating cultures grounded in discipline, pride, and excellence. His professional experience includes directing award-winning ensembles, mentoring aspiring educators and musicians, and implementing innovative recruitment and retention strategies that strengthen music programs and expand student opportunities.

A graduate of Lane College, Professor Lewis earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and later received a Master of Education from Concordia University. He has also completed graduate studies in music at Ohio University and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, reflecting his continued commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning.

In his new role at Rust College, Professor Lewis will lead the rebirth of the Iron Claw Marching Bearcats, a dynamic marching band program built on the principles of pride, precision, dignity, and no excuses. His vision is to establish one of the premier HBCU band programs by developing outstanding musicians, fostering academic achievement, and creating unforgettable performances that reflect the rich traditions and promising future of Rust College.

Professor Lewis believes music is more than performance; it is a vehicle for leadership, scholarship, discipline, and service. Under his leadership, the Rust College band program will emphasize excellence in musicianship, character development, community engagement, school spirit, and meaningful scholarship opportunities for students.

“Professor Lewis brings the vision, experience, and passion needed to usher in a new era for the Iron Claw Marching Bearcats,” said Dr. Karl Twyner, Chair of the Music Department and Director of the A’Cappella Choir. “His leadership will help build a band program that reflects the excellence, pride, and spirit of Rust College.”

Professor Lewis said he is excited to join the Rust College family and help inspire students to achieve greatness as both scholars and performers.
