Deon Wright II Participates in Mississippi Digital Humanities Residency Internship

HOLLY SPRINGS, MS – Rust College rising junior Deon Wright II is spending his summer gaining valuable experience in digital preservation, research, and community-based humanities work through the Mississippi Digital Humanities Residency Internship at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The internship provides Mississippi students and instructors with hands-on training in digitization and digital humanities. Through the program, participants learn how to identify, digitize, analyze, map, and preserve historical, cultural, and literary collections that reflect the stories and experiences of communities across the state.

Wright’s participation in the program reflects Rust College’s continued commitment to preparing students for meaningful academic, professional, and service-oriented opportunities. The internship allows students to work with experts affiliated with the Center for Digital Humanities at Southern Miss and the Mississippi Digital Library while developing skills that support historical preservation and public access to important community records.

“This opportunity has allowed me to learn how digital tools can be used to preserve history and make information more accessible to others,” Wright said. “Through digitization, mapping, analysis, and electronic preservation, I am gaining skills that can help support communities in preserving and better understanding their history and experiences.”

The larger goal of the Mississippi Digital Humanities Residency Internship is to equip participants with the knowledge and technical skills needed to work alongside peers and community members to preserve documents, share local histories, and expand access to cultural and historical materials.
